African plain
The vast expanse of the African plain opens out before visitors’ eyes in the middle of the zoo, next to the rhino and elephant enclosures. At 1.5 hectares in size, it represents the landscape of the savannah, and showcases animals from the southern regions of Africa in particular. Waterbucks, scimitar-horned oryx and blue neck ostriches live together as a community in this open landscape, just as they do in the wild. Damara zebras also show themselves to visitors in the adjacent enclosure.
In general, the ostriches successfully rear their eggs on the African plain just as they would in the wild. This is a rarity because young ostriches on ostrich farms usually hatch in incubators, with the eggs being taken away from their parents early on. Ostriches can often be found together with hoofed animals on the savannah, where they act as lookouts. Thanks to their long necks, they tower over the other animals, and are able to spot predators much sooner.
